Chrome extensions

Install from the Chrome Web Store or load your own.

Aetherium runs most Chrome extensions. Each profile has its own extensions.

Install from the Chrome Web Store

  1. Click the plug button in the toolbar and choose Chrome Web Store, or go to chromewebstore.google.com.
  2. Open the extension you want and click the floating Add to Aetherium button at the bottom right of the page.
  3. Read what the extension can do, then press Add extension.

You can also paste a Web Store link or extension ID into Paste a Chrome Web Store link or extension ID on the Extensions page and press Install.

Careful
Only add extensions you trust: an extension can read the sites it has permission for.

Use and manage extensions

  • Plug button: lists your extensions; click one to use it, or use the pin toggle to Pin to toolbar so its button sits next to the address bar.
  • Extensions page (Ctrl+Shift+X , ⋮ › Extensions..., or Manage extensions): turn each one on or off, see Details (permissions, version, errors), open its Options, or Remove it.

Ad blockers

Ad blockers such as uBlock Origin Lite need Let extensions filter network requests turned on in the Extensions page, then a restart. While it is on, Aetherium's own tracker blocking is switched off in tabs (the extension does that job) and PDFs open in Chromium's viewer.

Build your own (developer mode)

  1. On the Extensions page switch on Developer mode.
  2. Press New extension, give it a name and press Create to get a ready-to-edit Manifest V3 folder, or press Load unpacked to load a folder you already have.
  3. Each card now has Reload, Auto-reload (reloads when you save a file), Inspect background and Inspect popup. Errors show under Details.

The Developer guide button lists the chrome.* APIs Aetherium supports.

Good to know

  • Extensions do not update by themselves yet: open the extension's Web Store page and choose Reinstall in Aetherium.
  • Extensions do not run in private tabs.
  • Chrome apps and Chrome themes are not supported.
  • Removing a Web Store extension deletes its files; removing an unpacked one leaves your folder alone.
